Surgical intervention is the last option, but a necessary tool to save lives. Physicians Across Continents Doctors, surgeons and healthcare professionals do not charge for their valuable time or expertise, they are humanitarians.

Physicians Across Continents trained volunteer professional surgeons cover various specialties so that can carry out complex surgeries that are otherwise unavailable, due to the high cost or lack of expertise in that area.

Alongside delivering the surgeries we can train local staff, healthcare professionals thus access to high quality healthcare is still available in-between our visits. Physicians Across Continents aims to improve healthcare systems and to implement self-sufficiency through legacy projects.  

Cleft Lip and Palate

A congenital split in the upper lip on one or both sides of the centre, often associated with a cleft palate.

A condition where the baby’s upper lip and roof of the mouth remains open during development. CausesIt is a birth defect that occurs when the tissues that form the lip and the palate fail to fuse during pregnancy (when the embryo is developing). The exact cause of cleft palate is not known but genetic and environmental factors may be responsible; family history plays a roleMother’s activities during pregnancy that increase the risk of developing cleft palate include – Alcohol consumption – Cigarette smoking– Insufficient consumption of folic acid and prenatal vitaminsBeing obese or having diabetes during pregnancy may also increase risk

Thyroid


The thyroid, or thyroid gland, is an endocrine gland in the neck consisting of two connected lobes. The lower two thirds of the lobes are connected by a thin band of tissue called the thyroid isthmus. The thyroid is located at the front of the neck, below the Adam’s apple.

Obstetric fistula is a medical condition in which a hole develops in the birth canal as a result of childbirth or rape. This can be between the vagina and rectum, ureter, or bladder. It can result in incontinence of urine or faces. Complications may include depression, infertility, and social isolation.

WHO estimates that 50,000 -100,000 women develop obstetric fistula every year; and that there are currently 2 million women living with the condition, mainly in Asia and Sub Saharan Africa.
