Professor Matin Sheriff trained at internationally renowned Institute of Urology, London. He is currently the Specialty Lead for Urology & Lead Cancer Surgeon at Medway Foundation NHS Trust, Kent. He is founder & director of MISTIK (Minimally Invasive Surgery Teaching in Kent) & in partnership with Canterbury Christchurch University introduced master’s programme in minimally invasive surgery.

 

He has conducted pioneering research involving functional magnetic stimulation to suppress detrusor hyper-reflexia leading to original seminal paper published in British Journal of Urology in 1995 with numerous postgraduate dissertations by subsequent researchers and introduction of functional magnetic neuromodulation into clinical practice. He is is author of numerous peer reviewed publications. He is passionate Educator & Trainer.

 

Prof Sheriff introduced number of laparoscopic procedures in Kent including radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy & sacro-colpopexy with pelvic floor reconstruction for prolapse. More recently he introduced Da Vinci Robotic Surgery to further improve patient outcomes.

He is a recognised philanthropist regularly participating in international charity work for the last 30 years. He chairs Physicians Across Continents, a registered UK charity dedicated to international medical humanitarian work. He holds several overseas visiting professorships.

 

Prof Sheriff has actively participated in medical education, training and emergency aid work in Pakistan for over twenty-five years. Notably, he actively contributed in the medical relief efforts during the Kashmir earthquake in 2005, worked with BBC to report on the earthquake and raised over £0.5 million. He was instrumental in helping to establish Jatlan Charity Hospital in Azad Kashmir during this period.

 

Prof Sheriff he is widely credited for introducing and championing establishment of complex laparoscopic urological surgery in Pakistan where he was the first to perform laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in 2008. Over the years he has conducted numerous regular laparoscopic workshops. He has been instrumental in establishment of the laparoscopic live donor kidney retrieval programme at SIUT. Working with Prof Shamim Khan and SIUT team, he recently helps conduct the 4th annual international conference on minimally invasive surgery in Urology at SIUT. He is now working the same team to establish a national minimally invasive training centre at SIUT and other regional centres. He remains committed to education and training in Pakistan.

 

In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded honorary doctorate by university of Kent & invited to 10 Downing St & Buckingham Palace
